Large French Copper Plat a Feu / Hearth Vessel with Forged Iron Handle - Late 19th/Early 20th Century / 32.5" Tall

$550.00

A striking example of rural French hearth metalwork - a large copper plat a feu / hearth vessel with a long forged iron hanging handle and hand-peened rivets, dating to the late 19th / early 20th century.

Large scale: the copper bowl measures 16” in diameter, with an overall length of 32.5” including the forged handle. This form belonged to the working life of the hearth rather than the kitchen, a tool traditionally used with managing embers and fireside heat in the home.

The surface retains the irregular hammering, heat patina, and honest wear of use beside the fire, along with the beautifully shaped iron back plate and tapered handle characteristic of blacksmith-made hearth pieces. This is not a decorative reproduction - it is an authentic working-life piece, sourced in France.

Condition: Very good antique condition with surface wear, irregularities, heat darkening, and a stippled matte patina to the reverse from fireside exposure, all consistent with age and working-life use. A small center opening appears to have been added later for wall display.
Dimensions: 16” Diameter (copper bowl) 32.5” L (overall length)

Includes: Shipping within the continental U.S.
